Shortcuts[]
Youkai Mountain features 2 shortcuts which effectively require items.
Shortcut 1 - NISC*[]
The first shortcut takes place inside the factory. At the section where you take one of two small ramps over a gap, there is actually a path to the further left that you can use a Cradle or Reverie to get on. This will lead you up into a small tunnel with many boost rings and allow you to skip a short portion of the track.
However, this shortcut is actually slower than the regular path on most characters. It is advised only to be taken with high air/low speed characters like Suwako, or if you desperately need lots of spell in a hurry.
Be wary as right before the tunnel there is a small gap that you can fall into, and the respawn puts you right before that same gap, so if you do not have enough acceleration you may get stuck in a respawn loop.
It can also technically be taken as a NISC, though this requires falling into a deathplane at the far left of the conveyor belt, which will respawn you onto the ramp you would normally Cradle onto. Since you are respawning, it is most certainly slower than the normal path.
Shortcut 2 - ISC[]
The second shortcut is at the very end, right after the bridge, where the last U-turn can be cut off by using a Cradle or Reverie to go over the fence on the right side. This shortcut saves the most time and is used during Free Run.
Youkai Mountain Ending ISC - Gensou Skydrift
Paths[]
At the very first curve, there is an open area to the left, which can be flown over. No switching is necessary, and any character can make it across as long as you hold down.
Youkai Mountain First Corner NISC - Gensou Skydrift
Upon entering the waterfall section, there are two paths, one which follows the waterfall itself, and another to the right that lets you fly. The right path is faster for characters with a good air stat, while others should stay on the waterfall.
On the same section, there will be a small plateau to the left that the aforementioned right path would fly directly over. In either case it is faster to go from the waterfall to here and cut across, rather than going around it.
Strategy[]
The end results of the race depend extremely heavily on who has a Cradle or not for the last shortcut. This makes bagging for Cradles a strong strategy, but be wary of characters like Seija who will inevitably get their Last Word and deny your items.
The factory section is good for using Bombs due to its right angled walls and corners. It is also important to leave the factory with ample meter on both characters as there are not very many rings at all during the waterfall section.
